When the disciples heard the story of the
empty tomb from the women, they would not
believe it, and thought that the women were
speaking nonsense. Two of the disciples ran
to the tomb to see for themselves, and it was
just as the women had said: Jesus' body was
gone! Jesus had said He would rise again;
but even after all of the many miracles of
Jesus that the disciples had witnessed, they
still doubted.
|
As the disciples walked together, wondering
what could have happened to Jesus' body,
Jesus appeared and began to walk with them;
but the disciples did not recognize Him, and
were still grieving. And Jesus said to them,
|
"What manner of communications are these
that ye have one to another, as ye walk,
and are sad?"
|
One of the disciples answered, saying, "Are
you a stranger in Jerusalem, that you don't
know the things that have happened here?"
And Jesus replied,
"What things?"
When the disciples told Jesus about His own
crucifixion, and the empty tomb, Jesus said,
"O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that
the prophets have spoken! Ought not Christ to
have suffered these things, and to enter into
his glory?"
|
And Jesus spoke at length to them, explaining
all of the scriptures that concerned Himself;
but the disciples still were not aware that
this was Jesus. When they arrived at their
village, the disciples invited Jesus to have
dinner with them. Jesus went with them, and
when He blessed the bread and broke it and
gave it to them, the disciples realized that He
was Jesus; and when they recognized Him,
He vanished from their sight. They hurried to
to tell the others that they had seen Jesus,
and as they were telling their story, Jesus
appeared to all of them and said,
"Peace be unto you."
|
The disciples were very frightened, and thought
that they were seeing a spirit; but Jesus said,
"Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts
arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and feet,
that it is I myself: handle me and see; for a
spirit hath not flesh and bones,
as ye see me have."
And Jesus showed them His scarred hands and
feet; and they were full of joy and wonder.
Then Jesus asked for food, and the disciples
gave Him fish and honey. And when Jesus had
eaten, He said,
"Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ
to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third
day; And that repentance and remission of
sins should be preached in His name among
all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye
are witnesses of these things. And behold,
I send the promise of my Father upon you:
but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until
ye be endued with power from on high."
